Have you written a short story or novel? A personal essay or longer work of non-fiction? Before you have your composition professionally copyedited, you might consider a manuscript evaluation. This service is less expensive than a full copyedit and gives you an opportunity to address potential challenges in your manuscript.
My manuscript evaluation includes the following:
- Evaluation of writing technique (style and technical astuteness).
- Assessment of content (e.g, characterization, dialogue, credibility, narrative arc).
- Suggestions for developing/finessing the manuscript.
- Responses to three specific questions you submit with your manuscript.

Rates
- Up to 2,500 word submission: CA$140
- Full manuscript: CA$140 for first 2,500 words + $2.25 per 250 words thereafter (e.g., fee for 50,000 words: $140 + $427.50 = $567.50)
In your request, please:
- Provide a word count for the entire manuscript;
- Indicate whether you would like me to evaluate the full manuscript or the first 2,500 words;
- Indicate the genre (fiction, creative nonfiction, academic monograph, etc.).
Note: For novelists submitting their debut novels for evaluation, I strongly recommend an initial evaluation of the first 10 pages.
Notes
Notes
- Manuscript evaluations take one to six weeks, depending upon the length of the submission.
- The evaluation comes in the form of a separate document. While I may make a few notes in the margins of your document, the evaluation does not include a copyeditor’s exhaustive commentary on the manuscript.
- The manuscript evaluation process is not a guarantee that your work will be published.
