Editing

Julie Sutherland is my go-to whenever I need to tighten up my academic writing. She engages closely, carefully and critically with my work and provides me with high-level feedback in a timely manner. Julie’s services are especially useful to me when my scholarly manuscripts are over-length and in need of considerable cuts. Her fresh perspective on my work and her systematic editorial suggestions allow me to clarify my ideas and deliver the leanest possible manuscripts to the publishers.Marc Lafrance, Associate Professor of Sociology, Concordia University
Julie is one of the sharpest and most efficient readers I know – and I have known quite a few … She can spot things you’ve missed on several re-reads, and is remarkably precise and sympathetic in her editing.Richard Sugg, Author of Mummies, Cannibals and Vampires and A Singing Mouse at Buckingham Palace
I sent my book manuscript to Julie thinking that I had caught all the major stuff, but I was surprised (and delighted) that she found things to correct or ways to improve my writing on every single page. Julie is a masterful writer – she will not only catch your embarrassing typos, but she will help tighten up your language and clarify your prose, making your piece sound much more polished. She is also very easy to work with: professional, fast, and kind. I can’t recommend Julie enough, and I look forward to sending her more work in the future!Michelle DiMeo, Manager, Hagley Museum and Library, and adjunct professor of history, University of Pennsylvania
Julie is a topnotch writer and editor. She is able to understand reports and presentations on very complex issues and efficiently review, edit and shape them so that they are delivered to clients in an accessible and attractive form. Julie has contributed high-end value to many of our products and I highly recommend her. In addition, she is extremely professional and a pleasure to work with.Kevin Saville, President, KSAR & ASSOCIATES INC.
Julie handled my project on short notice and has strengthened the manuscript immeasurably. Detailed edits, comments, and suggestions. Thanks so much and look forward to sending more projects your way.Johannes P. Wheeldon, Author of After the Spring: Probation, Justice Reform and Democratization from the Baltics to Beirut
Julie is my secret weapon for all of my writing. She has been a support in my pursuit of a Master’s degree and with some legal writing. I am so thankful I found her. I have had to write academic and non-academic pieces and she has provided excellent feedback for my reflection, key suggestions for changes to increase clarity, and most importantly, she has done so with professionalism and humour.Mary Morrison-Clark, Recreation and Leisure Specialist and part-time Master's student in Adult Education and Community Development, St. Francis Xavier University
Julie was a huge asset to the administrative team at Pacific Theatre; her academic background and her expertise in the area of writing, in particular, were invaluable in presenting our company well to the public and to funding bodies. Her work was always professional, careful, and quickly executed.Rebecca deBoer, Producer/Administrator, Pacific Theatre, Vancouver
In my writing I often find I have complex ideas that I cannot convey very well on paper. This weakness can hold me back, particularly being a student of Philosophy, a field which values both precision and conciseness. As a tutor, Julie has set me straight with helpful tips and constructive feedback, as well as provided me with valuable resources to continue improving on my own. As a proofreader, Julie has pointed out weak points in my paper, which require either further unpacking or clarification. I am a lot more confident handing in papers knowing that Julie has looked them over and am already finding a huge improvement independently!Lana Friesen, Student and Director and Choreographer at Joy of Dance Productions

Manuscript Evaluation

Julie Sutherland has been a superb reader of both my critical and creative writing. Julie is a unique editor in so far as she engages with the work on its own terms. She doesn’t interfere with the voice or style of my writing except when it is clearly working against itself. Her careful and sensitive reading and suggestions have lifted the quality of my writing and its structure in significant ways. She has been very generous with her time and clearly spent a lot of concentrated time with my manuscripts, both locally and in the wider structural sense, for which I am very grateful.Dr. Sally Bayley, author of Girl With Dove (William Collins)

Poetry Workshops

Setting up a workshop of this nature was new to me, as I was unaware of ReLit, or bibliotherapy for that matter. I had no idea about the possibilities this type of mental health therapy could have on a population. Considering our community is dealing with insurmountable poverty, I feel this workshop could reach a large number of people at relatively no cost (paper and pens do not cost very much). Besides the low cost, I was completely enthralled with the experience. I am not a writer, but this workshop had me believing in the power of the written word!Sheryl Fogarty
After participating in my first bibliotherapy workshop, I realized that not only can I write poetry, but it also has a soothing effect on my mental and emotional state.Rozenn Beyer
Julie is a truly engaging facilitator. With the perfect mix of humour and compassion she makes bibliotherapy accessible and meaningful for all participants. I found both my creative mind and my spirit refreshed after engaging in the Poetry of the Senses workshop. Therapeutic, innovative – totally worthwhile!Bonnie MacLeod (writer and mental health advocate)

Tutoring

I was one of the students that raised my hand when Julie asked if anyone didn’t like Shakespeare. This course, Julie specifically, changed my view on Shakespeare. I can now say that I like Shakespeare and will likely take another Shakespeare related class. Julie’s enthusiasm and wit kept the class interesting … She included video clips and music that was relevant and current which was greatly appreciated. I feel as though she is one of the few professors that truly loves what she teaches and it really rubs off. Thanks Julie!3rd year university student

Language Coaching

I went to Julie for coaching before an important audition for Stratford. Her skill and knowledge of the text along with her exceptional ability to communicate academic understanding into practical advice for acting was crucial to preparing my Shakespeare monologue. I would highly recommend a session with her for any actor looking to deepen their understanding of the text.Jackie Faulkner, professional actor
